IUTOX has official status as a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with World Health Organizations. It therefore works closely with the WHO’s International Program of Chemical Safety in training toxicologists and establishing capability in toxicology on a world-wide basis. What’s more, as a member of the International Council of Science (ICSU), the premier international body that represents all scientific activities, IUTOX advances interests of toxicology as a profession everywhere.

V Latin American Risk Assessment Workshop (LARAW)
The V Latin American Risk Assessment Workshop (LARAW) was held April 28–May 3, 2013 in Águas de São Pedro, São Paulo, Brasil with much success. One of the photos below was taken during the planting of a tree left every year at the hotel as a souvenir of the event. 18 individuals participated in the training and came from academia (11), industry (six) and government (one). Since 2009, the LARAW program has trained 107 participants in the Human Toxicological Risk Assessment process. Activities included lectures, group discussion, and plenary presentation of the study cases developed by the participants. 10 full and two partial fellowships were distributed among academia and government. 16 participants were from Brazil and two from Latin America (Argentina and Colombia). Faculty was composed of Elaine Faustman and Wallace Hayes, USA, Gisela Umbuzeiro, Elizabeth Nascimento, João Lauro Viana de Camargo, and Silvia Berlanga de Moraes Barros. Sponsors of this event included Syngenta Agrosciences Brasil, ANDEF, FAPESP, OPCW, SOT, and ICSU. Thank you to all of the workshop participants and sponsors for its great success.
